The male kestrel flies (or runs, if you prefer) out of the nest because a few jackdaws landed thoughtlessly just five meters away. Not only did they land, but they also started an unplanned squawk that echoed throughout the area. With the female nearby, it's time to demonstrate vigilance, strength, and quick response!

Invasive species are a threat to blueberries and bird vetch is an invasive one that can invade undisturbed areas that most other invasive species do not (Rader). Friday, 9:07-11:11 am. 3 dead newts, no live ones
Weather: cloudy, cold
Coverage: from ABR and Eldercroft Heights intersection to the first stop sign. I walked with Anna P.
We documented 3 dead newts, one of whice was a juvenile.
Other roadkill: sphinx moth.
Traffic - 15 cars, 1 truck, 0 motorcycles, 2 bikes, 4 pedestrians, 6 parked cars.
My observations of the day -
Get out bright and early on saturday morning for a public walk led by the UNM Department of Biology. We will start the morning walking along the fishing ponds and gardens, then we will cross the bike path into the bosque trails to explore the areas around the beaver ponds and Rio Grande. We should see plenty of waterbirds, insects, and plants on this meander.

The UNM Biology CNC Team will start Saturday afternoon with a warm-weather walk around the volcanoes in Petroglyph National Monument. We will wander the broken lava looking for colorful lichen as well as basking lizards.
Be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen - this walk has no shade.
Another morning, another bright and early public walk led by the UNM Department of Biology. We will start the morning walk at the bird blinds, stroll across the bridge into the bosque near the decommissioned dam, and then wander back to the orchard near the Bachechi Center. We should see insects, fish, and birds on this stroll.

Three days in - it's time for a relaxed afternoon wander around the hills of the Gutierrez Canyon Open Space. We will spend an hour or two exploring the hills, then return to the parking area to set up for a night of insect observation.

We will spend the evening setting up and continuously checking light traps for insects. We will also go for an informal night hike along the trails in the Gutierrez Canyon Open Space.
In between the insect-spotting and night-hikes, we'll take up residence at a table at Rumor Brewing Company for anyone interested in ordering some food and drinks.
Throughout the City Nature Challenge our team will collect samples to investigate under the microscope. Now it's time to view these critters under the microscope! We will have these samples available to participants, or you can bring in your own soil and water samples to view at this lab event. Frequent trips to the UNM Duck Pond will supplement our samples if we run out of animalcules to investigate. We will document algae, diatoms, rotifers, euglena, insect larvae, and more!

Our final group event will be the traditional closing walk leaving from Castetter and heading out into the residential landscape South of campus. We'll loosely ramble to Roosevelt Park then head East to end the walk at Differential Brewing around 6:00pm.

I just got done looking at the plant list. Unfortunately, I had to disallow a large number of species from the list that were obviously cultivated specimens. The goal of the City Nature Challenge is to document WILD flora, fauna, and funga. Cultivated or captive organisms are not part of our native flora and should not be included in the CNC. They can be included in iNat, but should be marked as "captive/cultivated" or "organism is not wild." That way, they get a casual marker and g...
Day One is about done. I'm sure there are observations that will be trickling in. As I write this (10:30 pm), we have 1,694 observations of 677 species by 83 observers!!! That's stupendous for a first day, and a weekday, at that! Of course, the species count gets harder from here on out. The current leaders are Little Ol' Me with 209 observations, Dwight Bohlmeyer with 152 species, and Salt Marsh Moth with 14 observations.
